How to Shorten a Zipper and Make Zipper Tabs

Nylon zippers are perfect for using on all types of bags and purses that require a zipper closure. These types of zippers are inexpensive, readily available from your local sewing store, and because the zipper teeth are nylon, you can sew over them.

When sewing a nylon zipper into a bag or purse, it’s always easier to use a long zipper and cut it to size rather than try to use an exact size zipper. When using an exact size zipper, the metal parts on each end of the zipper always seem to get in the way when sewing and can result in broken sewing needles and ruined fabric. Luckily, it’s easy to shorten a zipper and then sew fabric tabs to each end of the zipper to add a professional finish.
